MJ Stanza Post

Using your creative writing--in other words, your Word Bank--from class, you should be able to construct a short, one-stanza, free verse poem about anything you want. These are the only requirements:

1. The poem must be a minimum of 10 lines.
2. The poem must have a minimum of 5 words per line.
3. Read Major Jackson's poems for inspiration, and follow his advice by ending each line with a noun or a verb, rather than with a conjunction (FANBOYS) or an article (a, an, the).

Leave your initials after your entry. Thank you!

  1. Vagabond

    Mice trickle across the cement,
    Vagabonds trace the sidewalks,
    Pungent smells and regret looming,
Lacking wings keeping them tied to reality,
    Holding dream-catchers and chasing fireflies,
Fine frenzy of thoughts and memories,
    Violently soaring and crashing, resignating…
    Raving and beating, destiny fading.
Passerby’s shy away, eye contact avoided.
    Inside the mind, simple vagabond.

  2. Wedding bells ring out from the church
The bride’s gown swishes as she dances down the aisle
    Holding her bouquet of flowers
The bride and groom vow to be together
For the rest of their lives
He puts a diamond ring on her finger
Their friends and family cheer as they kiss
They walk back up the aisle as a married couple
Her Christian Louboutin heels peeking out from under the dress
The red bottoms represent their love for one another
After the ceremony, they are whisked away to the reception
A beautiful fondant and buttercream cake awaits
They’ll save the top tier to share on their first anniversary
Which will hopefully be the first of many to come

  3. Girl

I think about her like a prisoner thinks about freedom.
She glistens in the sunshine with angels around her.
I think about her like she is a fantasy,
her words come out in a rhythm so smooth, floating in the air.
    I talked to her today,
confused and distorted like I just woke up in the darkness of my room.
    I talked to her again,
she listened to what I had to say and again I heard her voice like a hymn.
I asked her to move in with me yesterday,
I feel fearless and courageous around her.
I asked her to marry me yesterday,
she said yes, and I felt on top of the world.
    (25 years later)
    These memories I will treasure,
her life, our love can only measure,
He took her in the darkness,
he showed her the light in such a mess,
God tells me with a simple bird flying by,
    that everything will be fine.

  4. There’s ocean, holy waves,
    Endless caution, and generations rain,
    Rebellion of the peace pipes.

    Adrenalin running through old men,
    Childhood sunrise, childhood sunset,
Blackbirds freefalling on a rainy day.

Ambience slipping, the horse is shot,
Mouse dragging cat, tea parties slip,
    wine and cheese for dinner.

    Seas in the countryside’s,
    Church bells in war,
    Sickness is walking free.

  5. Chocolate lingering in the air,
    Sweltering in the oven heat,
    Melting together piece by piece,
    Puffing up like a blowfish,
Soft and mushy at first glimpse,
Tender to the tip of your fingers,
    Hard and crunchy after minutes,
Broken in half a gooey mess,
Crumbs are falling to the floor,
    Until there is no more.

  7. I hear the dramatic sound
    whist out of the stage
    getting lost in the audience
    becoming surreal and rambunctious
as the music mists through the air.
    I hear the painful symphony
    repeat mysterious chimes at dusk
    reminding me of monks wearing
    white satin cloaks at church.
I hear the elephant terrify Tarzan
    with a loud vibration shaking
the jungle sending individuals into a hotel.

  8. I remember the red chair in which I rocked
back and forth as I waited
    for my maw-maw to bring
me a delicious bowl of strawberrys and sugar.
I remember the big green tree,
which provided shade in the summertime
and a playground for us kids.
I remember the couch on which I slept
every Christmas eve as I waited
for Santa to surprise me with presents.
    I remember my maw-maw's house,
a small, two story house, how I looked
forward to going to her house.

  9. Soft, warm sheets tucked in around me
    Pulled up to my chin
My Fluffy pillow around my head
My silent, dark room invites sleep
I never want to get up

They sun tries to come into my room
But the drapes block its light
    Birds chirping in the trees
    Trees rustle in the breeze
They are telling me to get up
    But I would rather dream

  10. College

How do i feel about college?

    excitement, worry, fear, confusion, stress

    gossip, letters, meetings, dreams, expectations

    process, pressure, procrastination, probability, patience

pain, hope, stamina, essay, comedic relief

    I'm in college....

freedom from stress, pain, pressure, fear

excitement for what is and yet to come

gossip of where i will and will not go

process of deciding where i will and will not go

fear of pain if i make the wrong decision.

    College....

  11. The lasting impact of sadness
    Silent, calm, deep, and meaningful
    Lost in his thoughtful sorrow
    Peaceful, tranquil, slow, and tired
    Learning to overcome this tragedy

    Breathing for the first time
    Smile, laughter, happiness, and delight
    Flying upward toward the heavens
    Spirited, inspired, changed, and careless
    Driving into the sunset, free
