"January 13" Inspirational Blog

Rick Bass directs his readers to think about life's burning questions in his story, "January 13."

Please choose one of the following questions about which you will comment:

1. How might you "remember to look at [life] like a child?" (224). What does this mean to you?

2. After reading Bass' advice, "Take nothing for granted," please consider the things in your life that you have absolutely taken for granted. How will you make a concerted effort to live your life to the fullest?

After choosing one of the previous questions, please write an entry that would equal one page on a Word document. Deeply consider these questions before beginning your entry.

Remember to leave your initials at the end. Please email me your entry if it doesn't post.

Thank you all!

  1. People talk about not taking things for granted all the time. I can already tell you that I am now having a broader view of life. In our childhood, we do not realize all of the things and opportunities we have. Sports for example are a big part of my life. Football has molded me into the person I am today by not how the game is played, but the dedication that is required to play it. I was a big boy in 8th grade and i developed a passion for football and lost weight. I also let that dedication translate into my academics and personality. I am a hard worker. I enjoyed football so much. I know though that I took every opportunity to play it and enjoy it as much as I could. Now that I am not going to be able to be in a competitive football game anymore hurts me. I poured a good four years of my life into that. Some aspect of football was in my agenda every day. I am just so thankful to be around that game for so long. I have surgery scars to pictures to my helmet still with me for memories but I can honestly say I poured everything I could. Now looking back on it, I took football for granted becasue I took it so serious and did not enjoy it as much as I should have. I wanted to be so good that I lost the enjoyable part of just playing it. I walk into my room and have a picture of me playing football and I would do anyrhing to live that moment again. I took the gift of football for granted.

  2. As a child people look at the world differently as they do when they are adults, they look at it with a blank slate. starting off with a blank slate, everything is new and exciting, and frightening. seeing as you dont know what will hurt you and what will make you laugh, due to lack of experience, then you dont know how to react to situations. I know many people take manythings for granted. bessides the obious, food, water, and shelter, i think that we all take advantage of our transportation. besides the few exceptions we drive cars and ride the bus, in previous eras, before bikes scooters and longboards, everyone walked. if i wanted to go to austin on a college trip i would have to walk a few days, i am glad that no a days we have cars and busses, so now i can enjoy a trip to ACL rather than dread it.

  3. I’ve taken a lot of things in my life for granted. A lot of the things I’ve taken for granted are things that I have not even considered not having. Some of these include the opportunities that I have, my loving family, being able to read and write, being able to walk, and much more. Many of these things you do not think about on a daily basis such as the ability to walk; however, some people in the world are not physically capable of doing this, and I need to remember to be thankful for everything that I have. I learned a lot about taking things for granted during my outreach experience.
I worked with multiply-impaired children at T. H. Rogers, and it is like a wakeup call when you realize that these kids cannot walk, not speak, not sit up, and much more. It is devastating to realize that I have taken advantage of all that has been given to me over my life, when these kids make the best of their situation and just try to survive day to day. It made me realize that living my life to the fullest is one of the most important things I can do.
In order to live my life to the fullest, I try to take all the opportunities that come my way. Even things that seem trivial such as overcoming fears in order to do something that I really want to do is a way in which I’m living my life to the fullest. Living my life to the fullest also involves appreciating everyone I have around me in addition to everything that I have. I have a supportive family who loves me very much, a wonderful group of friends, teachers who want me to do well, and much more. If I ever need support or anything, there is always someone that I can turn to. One of the ways in which I try to live my life to the fullest is by helping others and giving back to those less fortunate.
Giving back to those in need is one of the most rewarding and important things that I can do with my life. I need to use all of the opportunities that God has given me to help make the world a better place. Living my life to the fullest for me means making a difference in the lives of others.

  4. Life is meant to be taken in slowly. It’s about breathing in and out, noticing all the small minor details that are usually overlooked, or brushed over too quickly. It is said that children are the best scientists, as children are new to the world; curious about all the nooks and crannies that escape normal view. Children explore, learn, and discover with an open mind, all judgment aside. One who looks at life as a child is being open-minded, careless and free.

  5. I think everyone takes things for granted in life, but some do more than others. I know I definitely take things for granted everyday. I don't realize how lucky I am to be living the life I have. I am able to go to a school that is personal and am able to have food on my table everyday. I have food, family, and a house which is pretty much all you really need, but in todays society people just want more and more. There seems to never be an ending point to people's needs. I will make an effort to live my life to the fullest by trying to be more aware and thankful of the things I am blessed to have and to have as much fun as possible while I am here.

  6. As I have gotten older I have started to look at life from an adults point of view rather than a child’s. While this is a great thing I have also missed out on life. When I used to look at life like a child, everything seemed so great and it seemed as if nothing could go wrong. All of the little things in life were huge and all of the huge things in life seemed enormous. Every holiday had a perk; birthdays were a day all about you, the tooth fairy could fly, the Easter Bunny existed, and Christmas consisted of Santa flying his slay, climbing down the chimney and giving you presents. As a child I believed everything about these holiday’s, which built them up to be the greatest days and something to look forward to. Of course, I still look forward to these holidays, but they were more exciting when I believed in Santa and the Easter Bunny. The quote from January 13, “Remember to look at [life] like a child” (224) is a great quote to abide by. I need to not let the little things slide by in life and instead make them up as more than they truly are. Children make everything a big deal, just like it snowing in the story January 13 was a big deal. To me, being a child is living life to its fullest by experiencing everything and letting even the little things being big things. For children even the simplest task is fun to them and adults should start making them fun too.

  7. At the age of eighteen, I view the world through the eyes of an "adult," but there was a time when I looked at life like a child. The world is unknown to a child; everything is new to them. When I think back to my childhood, I remember how fascinated and excited new things would make me. As I've grown up, the little things fail to excite me like they used to when I was younger. For example, when kids are younger they believe the myths they are told about the holidays; the thought of Santa delivering them presents on his sleigh excites them. But as they grow up and discover that everything they used to believe is fake, the holiday itself become less exciting. This quote , " Remember to look at [life] like a child" is a good quote for everyone. I remember when I was younger, I would do anything without thinking twice; I had no cares in the world.

  8. Life is so easy to take for granted. In the words of Ferris Bueller, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." I have taken high school for granted. Senior year has gone by so fast. Now we have less than 18 days of high school left before everything changes and we go off to college. I wish I would have enjoyed the little things more. Like sitting at the lunch table with my friends, cheering at football and basketball games, and dancing on stage. Im going to take these last days of high school slowly and enjoy them because sooner than later they will be gone.

  9. I can easily say that I have taken everything in my life for granted at some point. I take my family for granted, I take my health for granted, I take my lifestyle for granted, I take the water I drink so plentifully for granted, I take my ability to walk for granted, and I take my ability to see, and hear, and understand for granted. I am ashamed to admit this, but you have to realize this in order to make a change. Through the struggles faced in my life I believe that I have learned a great deal about not taking things for granted. I have developed a soft spot for almost everything. So many things make me tear up. I tear up when I see old couples walking together holding hands. I tear up when I see the commercial about the SPCA. I tear up because I feel for these people. I wish, so badly, that I could help every person in the world, but just as soon as I think of this I realize that it is impossible. It is impossible for us humans to not take things for granted, but I hope that every day that I live, I live to the very fullest.
