Tone Vocabulary Blog

Please pick 3 tone words from the Tone Vocabulary List under SF Documents on the class web page. If you do not know the meanings of these words, then you need to look them up.

Please write the 3 words as the first part of your entry. Then, without telling, please write a passage--no fewer than 10 lines--that exhibits ONE of the tone words.

Try to be grammatically correct and creative, and please write your initials at the end of the entry.

We will use your entries as part of an in-class game/activity involving tone.

Thank you!

The base runner slid into second base. He stood up and said something over his shoulder at the second basemen. Sparks fire and the second basemen got all up in the runners face. The fielder angrily yelled at the runner for his heinous actions. The runner was thrown out of the game for his actions and as he left the fielder blew him a kiss goodbye and told him if he said it again he would kill his family.

The application HAS to be sent in today. I don't have a choice - there are no late applications accepted. I can't believe I didn't know this earlier! What kind of college doesn't let you know about this deadline until the very last minute? But then it wasn't their fault, it's mine. I should have known! If I get this done on time, I swear, I'll never procrastinate again. Never. But there's so much to do! I have to write the essay, and fill out the rest of the application before midnight tonight... OH. MY. GOD. It's okay. I can do this. But the deadline is TWO hours away! And there is still so much to do! If I start now, maybe I can get it done. Maybe. Why didn't I check the website earlier?

Emily sits there, thinking to her self how much she hates her life. Even though she has anything anyone would ever want, she wants more. Her mother struts in, wearing a glamorous dress that is yelling "I am rich." Her mother then says," Honey, we are going to a dinner."
"Whatever mom! I don't really want to talk to you anyways."
"Umm. Ok honey I will see you tonight."
Emily hates her life; she is unhappy, and wants to get rid of her life.

The kid ran up the stairs and then it happened; his life would never be the same. He was just 6 years old and he know his dream of becoming a great baseball player was over. His life was just beginning and now all he could say to himself was, "Mommy! My life is over!?" His mom, Jane, rooms to where the noise was coming from and there she saw him holding his right left just dangling from the side.
    "What happened?" Asked, Jane.
"I was running up the stairs and then the stairwell jumped up and tripped me on purpose!" said John.
"Why were you running up the stairs?"
"I wanted to go play my video games. Waaahhh! My life is over!?"
"Oh pipe-down, John! It is just a scratch. You don't need to go to the hospital or anything."
    "Oh." :)

Why am I at school right now? I'm tired of all of the work I have to do every day. I'm a senior for crying out loud! I shouldn't be subject to this kind of treatment. Why don't we all just quit school and call it a year already? I'm already into college, so why does learning anything more matter at this point? The tests and homework keep piling up and all I want to do is just sit back and relax. Can't a guy get a break? Oh well, only a month left. It better come fast.

Holly waited months for her 18th birthday to come around. Each day that passed she marked it off in her Louis Vuitton planner that she carried around 24/7. The day finally arrived and she opened a tiny box, a box too small for anything that she would care for. Already disappointed in the size of her gift, she unfolded the piece of paper and was extremely shocked. The piece of paper read,"Trip to New York City." Her parents went on to explain that she would take a private jet to New York City for a shopping spree. That day at school she let everyone know what her birthday present was. She was not the type of girl to hold something like that inside. At night she packed her Gucci rolling suitcases with the latest and greatest fashion accessories to show off in New York City. First stop, Neiman Marcus, where Holly bought everything she liked. Holly literally had no budget and her mommy and daddy would buy anything for her. As she made her way down Times Square she strutted down the sidewalk like she was on a runway, displaying her new designer shoes.

Kat had just left the candy story in the village. She had a bag full of candy and was in a good mood until she saw a hand. Down the sidewalk she spotted a hand waving out of no where. Immediately she ran the other way in fear. The car was right after the mysterious waving hand; she had no idea how she was going to get to the car. All of a sudden, she took off sprinting towards the car. As I slowly walked to the car, she screamed at my to unlock the door. Once she heard the "click" of the door, she jumped in ducked her head so the waving hand couldn't see her. She refused to look up until we had escaped from the waving hand. Eventually we were out of sight and she emerged from hiding.

The taco tasted like nothing she had ever eaten before. The hard taco shell made a crunch when she took her first bite. She could feel the cool lettuce touch her fingertips as she picked up the taco for the next bite. She could taste the juiciness of the tomatoes underneath the lettuce. The meat was perfect not too greasy like the ones at fast food restaurants. It was warm like a day on the beach in Mexico. The cheese was melted perfectly across the top of the taco. The beans were dripping out the edges as she took the second to last bite. The taste took her back to her childhood in Mexico. She didn't want it to end.

It was the teacher's first day in class and he had no idea what he was doing. His lessons made no sense and he assigned way to much homework. It wasn't soon before the students started to hate him. They would sass him in class until he was near tears. One student in particular had no respect for him whatsoever. This student's name was Marcus. He had no filter on his mouth and said everything that was on his mind. As a result, Marcus received an F in the class. One day, Marcus decided to get his teacher back. So Marcus came up with a master plan.

  10. Nostalgic, Elegiac, Disdainful

The beach chair, a faded blue from hours of endless sunlight, remained vividly in Penelope’s memory. The ocean waves, soft but loud, rolled in almost gracefully; rustling seashells and crushed sand dollars as they crashed to the shore. She reminisced the salty air, the moisture on her fingertips, the sun on her skin, and even more so, the summer spent with her deceased brother, Javier. Her broken heart mourned for summers past. Summers spent with Javier on the beach, walking up and down the shore, collecting shells and talking about anything and everything. She sighed, and worked to change her train of thought, on to happier times.

He wandered the city streets searching for some kind of meaning. In all of his years roaming this earth, he never could find his spot to fill that fit just perfectly. He felt hopelessly out of place. He felt as if he was lost inside of his own body. Arnold never allowed himself to become attached to anything on this earth. The rain provided him with a sense of comfort. As soon as the rain stopped he returned to his mind, which constantly taunted him with troubling uncertainty of the world around him. He never fully grasped the concept of life itself. He spent his life questioning.

  12. Nostalgic, apologetic, compassionate

Kate sat in her dorm room staring out the window overlooking the green courtyard that lay beneath. The courtyard reminded her of where her and her friends used to sit and eat lunch during their four years of high school. Those lunches were the only time a day they all got to be together. They'd talk about their days, share the latest gossip, laugh, and sometimes a tear or two might be shed on a bad day. She missed her friends so much even though she had made new friends at college. How was Leslie doing at Vandy? Or how about Christine at Wash U? The eight of them tried to keep up an ongoing message via facebook so that they could keep up with each other's lives; however, this was not going exactly as planned. Everyone was busy with their new lives, and Kate felt like she was a thing of their pasts. Life would keep going on, but those lunches would remain in Kate's mind for years to come.
